We are a WI in Stroud Green, London N4, created in late 2011 to bring together crafty- and community-minded women for fun and mutual support. We are a cross-borough organisation – Stroud Green is partly Haringey and partly Islington – and welcome visitors from N4 and surrounding postcodes e.g. N5, N6, N7, N8, N19. We meet monthly on the 3rd Monday, 7.30pm inside Stroud Green School, N4 3HB (please use the Perth Road entrance near the junction with Woodstock Road).
At the end of January 2018 we welcomed the Hatters WI (Harringay and Tottenham) to merge with us.
Who are we?
We are a group of women who live in and around Stroud Green. Our founding President, Annie Martin, suggested on an area forum in Summer 2011 that we form a local branch; and in November 2011, we had our first meeting with our wonderful WI advisers. We are part of Middlesex Federation (MFWI); all WI branches belong to a County Federation, which supports them through formation and on an on-going basis. We are very grateful to MFWI for their support, in the shape of advisers Maureen Handley, Liz Morrell, Carol Sullivan and Sarah Wilson.
The WI is non-party political and non-sectarian. We don’t care about religion, colour or ethnicity; nor do we care if you can’t knit or bake (we’ll teach you if you want us to). We do care that you are interested in getting to know other local women, in being involved in your community, in learning, and in enjoying yourself!
2020 membership costs £43.00 p.a., for which there are a minimum of 11 monthly meetings. Members receive 8 copies a year of WI Life magazine, and our monthly newsletter as well as access to Middlesex News, our Federation newsletter. You don’t have to live in or around Stroud Green to join us, but with over 50 WIs in London there may be another one more convenient to your home or work – click here to find WIs by postcode.
If you would like to visit us to get an idea of what we’re all about, you’re very welcome to attend a meeting. Just look at our calendar and choose a date – we will be delighted to see you! For visitors we currently charge £2 or £5 (to cover the cost of materials at certain meetings). You can attend up to 3 meetings as a visitor before needing to join.
If you would like to be added to our mailing list for notification of meetings and special events, or are interested in joining us, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will get back to you! You can also follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram via the buttons on the sidebar.
What we do
We have 11 monthly meetings a year at which we hear speakers, get crafty, and talk, talk, talk! We eat too; we have some excellent bakers within our group, and what would the WI be without cakes?
Being a member of the WI is very much about having fun, but it’s also about demonstrating a commitment to one’s community. We have a relationship with Stroud Green Primary School – e.g. cakes for their fundraising sales, craft activities in the holidays, help with reading – and the current charity we are supporting, as voted by our members, is Mind in Haringey. We have also worked with local refuges run by Solace Women’s Aid and several other community groups, and with Crouch End-based charity Open Door, who offer free counselling and psychotherapy services to young people in Haringey, the Friends of Finsbury Park and with Seeds – a Saturday club for learning disabled adults and their families and friends.
Learning and creativity are important elements of the WI’s remit. We learn together in our local groups, and we can take advantage of Denman College, the WI’s educational institution in Oxfordshire, which runs day and short courses for members and non-members alike.
We also support the National Federation of Women’s Institutes’ (NFWI) campaigns, such as ‘Love Your Libraries’.
