Inpatient Independent Mental Health Adocate Service
We provide advocacy on all the mental health wards at:
- St. Anne’s Hospital
- Denis Scott Unit, Edgware Hospital
- Chase Farm Hospital
We also support patients under the Mental Health Act in other settings across Barnet, Enfield and Haringey, including people subject to Community Treatment Orders.
What is inpatient Advocacy?
Being admitted to hospital under the Mental Health Act can be a difficult and confusing time. Independent Mental Health Advocates provide a safeguard for patients, helping them to understand their rights under the Act and how the Act specifically applies to them. This can include helping people to understand how to appeal against their section, support them in asking for leave from the hospital and to understand the reasons for any proposed medication. We help people to exercise their rights and support them in a range of other ways to ensure that they can actively participate in decisions about their care and treatment.
Referrals to Advocacy
Independent Mental Health Advocates regularly visit each of the wards at Chase Farm, St. Anne’s Hospital and the Denis Scott Unit to meet with people under the Mental Health Act. The times of these visits are advertised on the wards. Additional visits can be made for specific appointments or when people need support more quickly.
Patients, responsible clinicians, nurses, approved mental health professionals and nearest relatives can contact the service between 9.00 and 5.00 Monday to Friday by phone or email: email@example.com.
